In praise of clotheslines

From my readings I have discovered that today is actually “National Hanging Out Day” in the United States. At first I thought it strange that encouragement is needed to use clotheslines (especially in these times of climate change) but then remembered our trip to the U.S.A. a few years ago. It was during July and the temperature most days was over 100°F, so it was with disbelief that we found our friends used electric dryers – basically due to the fact it was illegal to have a clothesline!

We have an old Hills Hoist and I enjoy hanging clothes on the line but my dream line is an old-fashioned one that would run parallel to the fence and be propped up in the middle. I love being out in the fresh air with the dogs playing around me and the sound of birdsong.


We have lived in various places over the years and I can clearly remember hanging nappies out during Canberra winters with the wind chill factor bringing the temperature to below freezing. I would wear woollen gloves covered by rubber gloves to protect my fingers. To contrast, during our time living near the Tropic of Capricorn in Queensland I would hang the washing out at night and take it in first thing in the morning. If I didn’t do this, the heat of the day and the strong rays of the sun would quickly bleach the garments.

Using clotheslines can also be quite social. At one time the dividing fences between our home and the neighbouring houses were very low so I could easily chat with my next door neighbour. We would speak of every day things as well as deep issues.

Life can continue on its merry way without a dryer and I would encourage anyone who doesn’t have a clothes line to get one. If it is forbidden in your area, have the rules changed, put one up in the garage or have a folding clothes horse that can be used in the garden. Our world is warming and having your washing dry in the fresh air has wonderful benefits all round!

New life

At the back door in the early hours of the morning, I peered out into the moonlit night to investigate the bellowing. There was a cow at the fence but I decided not to go any further in fear of disturbing our dogs as they would need no encouragement to add to the commotion.

In the light of the new day the reason was clear. Two little new born calves lay damp on the grass and after a couple of attempts one struggled to her wobbly feet and made her way to the now calm mother. What a delight! There are so many unexpected joys in life.

Holidays

Hooray for holidays! It’s a wonderful time of just ‘being’.

Being present in the moment, aware of what is happening - now.
Being able to do anything as the fancy takes, drop all and go.
Being available for others.
Being able to enjoy the surroundings and the passing of precious time.

The cottage and the fresh country air are now calling ...
so we’re off!
